Museo Nacional de Antropologia

The Soumaya Museum

Easily the most recognizable building in Mexico City is the Soumaya Museum, the wavy looking structure, covered in hexagonal tiles is a piece of art in itself. Is it Safe to Visit Mexico City?

Mexico City is just about as safe as any other major Latin American city. While crime can be present, it doesn’t usually involve tourists. The only potential crime that tourists may encounter is petty theft, such as pickpockets. We recommend practicing common sense safety habits, such as being aware of your surroundings, being aware of your belongings, and not wandering in the city alone at night. If you choose to partake in the vibrant nightlife, it is a good idea to employ the use of taxi service apps, such as Uber, Lyft, etc. to get home. Just follow our basic Mexico safety tips and you’re sure to have a safe, great time!

Is Mexico City Safe for Solo Female? 

Mexico City is safe for solo female travelers, however some important tips to know for women are as follows. The metro has cars that are dedicated to women and children in case you prefer that feeling of extra comfort. It can be advised to dress conservatively, if you can, as most locals don’t even wear very revealing clothing, keep an eye on your drink- this is a common safety habit for women anywhere, and if you get catcalled, ignore it- confronting the problem may cause further issues. These guidelines for safety can be used in any city, which is why we also suggest them for Mexico City as well.

Is Mexico City Expensive?

As Mexico’s capital and largest city, Mexico City is more expensive than most of the country. That being said, it’s not that expensive compared to major cities in Europe or the United States. A meal at an average restaurant will cost around $8.50, which isn’t too bad, eh? If you do your research, eat local, and look for free or less expensive activities, you can get a lot of bang for your buck in Mexico City! Of course, you can also splurge if you want to! Mexico City has some great luxury hotels and fine dining restaurants that will be well worth the money. Ultimately it depends on how you like to travel, the city will have luxury options available, as well as budget options, but on average Mexico City is a little cheaper than the standard international city.

What to Do in Tulum?

Playa Paraiso

Easily one of the best beaches in Tulum, the white sandy beaches, and mesmerizing waters make this the perfect place to relax in the sun. It is highly recommended that you take the time to swim in the calming blue waters, as you can and are encouraged to swim in the beaches of Tulum. You can even try your hand at snorkeling, and discover what kind of sea life is residing at Tulum’s Playa Paraiso. You are able to rent lounge chairs at beach clubs, but the best part about Playa Paraiso is that it is public access, so you can spend the day here without spending a single penny! It’s no wonder Playa Paraiso is one of the best things to do in Tulum. 

Cenotes

The Yucatan Peninsula is filled with cenotes, a cenote is a naturally created pool, where limestone bedrock has fallen through the Earth. Cenotes can be found in caves, or in the open air, either way, they are one of the must do things in Tulum. Check out Gran Cenote, Cenote Caracol, or Cenote Dos Ojos, which are some of the most popular cenotes in and around Tulum. There is nothing like swimming in these natural sinkholes, and the relaxing aqua waters make them one of the best things to do in Tulum.

Sian Ka’an Biosphere Reserve

This biosphere is definitely considered one of the gems of Tulum. With calm waters, pristine beaches, colorful coral reefs, and wildlife all around, a trip here will be discovering the untouched world of the caribbean coast. You can take an eco-friendly tour of the biosphere, which will be just as fun as it is educational. Rent a Bike

If you will be spending any substantial amount of time in Tulum, a great way to get around the town is by bicycle. With cheap rentals and bike friendly access, you’ll have just as much fun on the journey to your activities, and riding around with the breeze flowing is the perfect way to get from place to place!

What to See in Tulum? 

Tulum Main Square

The main square in Tulum is in the center of town and is a great focal point if you decide to wander the town. There is a huge colorful ‘Tulum’ sign in the town square, that is a great place for a photo op. While it may be touristy, it’s always fun to get that great vacation picture, and here is the place to do it. Then relax around the square while you visit some shops, or get a treat, but the bright colorful sign is what to see in Tulum!

Tulum Ruins

These Mayan ruins may be some of the most unique in Mexico. Their location is absolutely stunning, as these ancient ruins are parched on the side of a cliff that drops down to a beach below. Wander the temples and ancient castles, then take a trip down to the beach below. It is becoming a more popular attraction, so we recommend getting there in the morning for that perfect picture! The stunning Tulum ruins are one of the best things to do in Tulum, and should definitely not be missed!

Tulum Boutiques

A unique aspect of Tulum is the amount of shopping you can get done! There are many small boutiques filled with artisanal gifts, as well as upscale clothing and gifts. Take a walk around town and window shop ‘til you drop, or find the perfect souvenir to take back to your family and friends, you’ll be able to find some unique pieces at the boutiques in Tulum.

Where to Go Out in Tulum?

Batey

Tulum’s nightlife scene is slowly growing, with a couple bars to visit, you’ll have a great time uncovering the night scene. Batey is a great place to start, with live music on most nights and eclectic decor, the atmosphere is lively and vibrant. Batey is the perfect place to socialize and enjoy great music with a great drink!

Santino

If you’re not too tired from exploring Tulum, head to Santino, where you can dance the night away. In the center of Tulum, this small bar has a tiny, but albeit irresistible dance floor. Bring your dancing shoes and be ready to dance the night away! 

I Scream Bar

A great bar for happy hour drinks and cocktails! A more relaxed yet still energetic atmosphere, I Scream Bar also has great snacks and sweet treats! I Scream Bar is the perfect place to go out in Tulum if you still want to socialize, but don’t want to be out all night. 

How Do I Spend a Day in Tulum?

If you only have one day in Tulum, it is imperative that you visit the ‘must see’ places in Tulum. We recommend starting the day at the Tulum ruins, visiting in the morning is the perfect time because there are less crowds, meaning you can really take your time to look around and take the perfect picture. Next, stop by Playa Paraiso, spend the afternoon at the beach with a picnic lunch, order something from one of the beach bars! Make sure to swim in the beautiful turquoise waters, as you can’t visit Tulum without going for a swim! End your afternoon cooling off in a cenote, another opportunity to have a great swimming experience in one of nature’s swimming pools. Then, head back to Tulum’s center, where you can take a picture with Tulum’s brightly colored city sign, as it is one of the most popular things to do in Tulum. Before leaving town, you should stop by Batey or I Scream Bar for a final goodbye cocktail, to cheers to your time in Tulum! 

Is it safe to walk around Tulum at night?

Tulum is a very touristy town with less crime than other standard cities and towns in Mexico. But, we recommend practicing common sense safety practices while in Tulum. We suggest looking after your things while at the beach, while it is not common for things to be lifted easily, it can happen. We urge the same caution for being aware of pickpockets, as well as walking around town alone at night. 

Can you swim in Tulum beach? 

Yes! Tulum Beach is one of the best beaches in Mexico, offering everything from private beach clubs to public areas on its long stretch of sand. The clear blue waters are usually calm, making it a great beach for swimming, and it’s also great for snorkeling to see the colorful coral and countless fish. And of course, you get to do all this in the shadow of a Mayan pyramid!

What Can You Do for Free in Tulum?

While Tulum is mainly a resort beach town, catered to tourists, you can expect most things to have a small, affordable fee. However, the below listed activities are free, and also mentioned on our list above! We would also like to note that exploring and wandering around a new place is always free, and sometimes you find the best spots this way!

Gran Museo del Mundo Maya

The Great Museum of the Mayan World is the perfect place to really learn about the Mayan civilization. From artifacts to historical explanations you will learn about all of the aspects of the Mayan culture, starting from the beginning of time. This museum was inaugurated the year in which the Mayan calendar ended, 2012. It’s a great idea to visit this museum before venturing out to the ruins, because it will provide a deeper understanding and knowledge of each significant ruin site. Because of the rich Mayan history and the impact on today’s descendants, visiting the Gran Museo del Mundo Maya is one of the top things to do in Merida, Mexico.

Attend a Festival

While Merida is not considered a ‘party city’ and you will not find any crazy clubs, there are yearly festivals that are not to miss, and some of the most fun things to do in Merida. If you’re lucky enough to be in Merida at the beginning of January, you’ll get to experience Merida Fest, which takes place Jan 5-26. During these few weeks there are daily fiestas happening all over the city, and the opening night includes a massive fireworks display that you can watch from Plaza Grande. About a month later in February you’ll be in town for Carnaval Merida, which takes place at the nearby fairgrounds where many parades take place. From 19 – 26 yo can enjoy colorful floats while socializing with friends and locals! November 1st brings the Day of the Dead, where many people pay visits to the cemetery and honor the dead. It’s truly a sight to see as not many people around the world celebrate this holiday in the same fashion.  

Experience Cantina Culture

Try the best of Mexico’s spirits and cuisine as you try many of Merida’s authentic cantinas. If you are unsure of where to start, you can take a cantina tour, where a guide brings you to a few great spots with delicious beer and yummy snacks. For a fan favorite, you can go to La Negrita, which is recommended by everyone, especially if you are new to the cantina scene. But there is something for everyone if you are looking for a great time and willing to experience authentic Mexican culture! 

What to See in Merida?

Plaza Grande

Merida’s lovely central square, Plaza Grande, is a great starting point for your trip. There is a huge colorful sign with the city’s name, and most walking tours will begin here. Plaza Grande hosts many events throughout the week, such as traditional Yucatan dancing on Mondays and a large artisanal craft fair on Sundays. You can also catch other events happening throughout the week and special events at certain times of the year. Plaza Grande also has free WIFI as all public spaces in Merida do. If there are no events going on, it’s a perfect place to sit under a shady tree and enjoy the day!

Paseo de Montejo

Merida’s famous main street is a favorite to stroll, wander the shops, and admire the colorful mansions that line the main road. With the best part of the main drag stretching from the Montejo Monument to the Monumento a la Patria, you’ll find delicious coffee shops and cultural gems all along the road. It’s easy to stroll the wide sidewalks as you peek into museums, mansions, and cafes, you’ll easily spend half a day or maybe more discovering all there is to see, no wonder Paseo Montejo is one of the best things to see in Merida!

Lucas de Galvez Market

A local market that has so much variety, you’ll wander the stalls two or three times just to see everything! You can purchase fresh fruits and vegetables, artisanal goods, clothes, and even meals. It’s the perfect place to pick up some groceries, or just enjoy the company of the locals while having a great meal. The Lucas de Galvez Market is a must see in Merida!

Catedral de San Ildefonso

One of the oldest cathedrals in the Americas, Catedral de San Ildefonso, was finished in 1598 and is impressively standing tall in the middle of Merida. Built in the Spanish style you can still see remnants of Spanish influence integrated into the architecture. On Fridays, there is a projected light show on the Cathedral’s walls, a unique must see in Merida!

Things to do Near Merida

Uxmal

About an hour from Merida, you can see some well preserved Mayan ruins that are easily accessible and provide a great look into Mayan architecture and history. Over 3,000 years ago the Mayans were thriving and this is when they built some of these ancient cities. At Uxmal you can even climb on most of the ruins, with the exception of the Pyramid of the Magician. But, every aspect of these ruins create the perfect photo op, and they’re a fun site for the whole family!

Chichen Itza

A bit further than Uxmal from Merida, Chichen Itza is the most famous Mayan ruin you could visit. The iconic pyramid is stuck in our minds as being the epitome of a Mayan Temple. When staying in Merida you are not too far from the famous spectacle, and around the Chichen Itza site, you can see many other well known ruins, and you can even visit some cenotes around the area as well. Dive into the heart of the Mayan culture when you take a day trip to Chichen Itza and the surrounding sites, it’s truly one of the best things to do near Merida.

Note, if you go to upscale restaurants or foreign restaurants, the prices may be higher. On the whole venturing around Mexico is not very expensive, and if you eat local it adds to the savings!

Things to do in Cancun

A Dive into the Arts

The Cancun Underwater Museum is a series of galleries submerged in the Caribbean Sea at the Cancun National Marine Park. This is a non-profit organization dedicated to the sculpting arts. Most of the pieces have been curated by British Sculptor Jason DeCaires Taylor, as well as local Mexican sculptors. Opened in November 2010, this museum is a great alternative location for snorkelers and divers to see. You are able to explore the sea floors of Cancun as well as revel at the impressive pieces of art. Its artistic significance is undeniable, but what is most interesting is that the Underwater Museum is also an act of conservation. The main goal of this project is to save the coral reefs nearby, as well as creating interesting habitation for fish and other sea life. So put on your snorkels and take a splash into the arts!

Walk along the Ocean Floor

The Interactive Aquarium in Cancun is one of the impressive collections of sea life in the region. Located at the La Isla Shopping Centre, the Aquarium is a good place to escape the retail havoc and enjoy the serenity and interesting wildlife. A very well maintained aquarium, this is the perfect place to bring your family and take part in activities like petting stingrays as well as touching starfish and even swimming with dolphins in the outdoor area of the Aquarium!

Step into the Past

El Meco Archaeological Site is a well preserved Mayan ruin located in the North of Cancun. El Meco, what used to be Yax Kin (First Sun) was built in the Early Classic era for the purpose of fishing and trade. The influence of Chichen Itza facilitated a golden era for this city and became a site of great religious importance as the Isla Mujeres were just off the coast and served as a religious pilgrimage rest stop. There are many structures scattered around the grounds with attractions like three different plazas or the pyramids and temples. 

A stretch at the beach

Cancun is famous around the world for its many, many gorgeous beaches. The beautiful white sands and the turquoise waters have people affectionately naming it Mexico’s answer to the French Riviera. Try the Playa Tortugas, where you can lay out in the sun, swim, watch turtles and even bungee jump! 

Park Promenade

In the city centre, El Parque de las Palapas is the main park in Cancun. It may seem like any other plaza in Mexico, but this park is unparalleled as it is dedicated to preserving the history of Mexico. Lorenzillos

If you aren’t new to vacationing in Mexico, you have probably heard Lorenzillos. This restaurant also houses locations in Los Cabos as well as the Dominican Republic. Operating for 30 years, this is the perfect place to have a delicious quality lobster or seafood dinner, as well as wind down with your family or friends and have a glass of wine while watching the sun set into the Caribbean Sea. If you want a fine dining experience and a taste of the sea, Lorenzillos is the place to go. 

Marakame Cafe

For what looks like a treehouse, this is actually a very local Mexican cafe that serves delicious Mexican fare as well as international options. From handmade tortillas to ceviche to barbacoa, Marakame Cafe is a laidback cafe ambience that will ease you into the Mexican experience. If you want a little taste of music, they play live Mexican music in the evenings. 

Loncheria El Pocito

If you want an authentic Mayan Yucatan experience, Loncheria El Pocito is the place to do it. Traditional Mayan home-cooking and its hospitable environment makes for an instant connection to the culture and customs of this region. Locheria El Pocito serves delicacies like agua de chaya (tree spinach water) and relleno negro de pavo (turkey stew). The restaurant is built in the typical Yucatan Palapa style, which also keeps the restaurant very cool in the summer. 

Is Cancun safe?

Cancun is a tourist city. This means that as the economy is not solely local, crime is a less common occurrence as far as things that you might see in a more industrial or multi-economic community. This being said, it is in good form that you practice safety habits such as watching over your things to avoid any possible pickpocket, or not leaving your bag or drinks unattended. Are there sharks in Cancun?

Sharks inhabit all oceans and seas, so yes, there are sharks in Cancun. However, it is a very rare occurrence to see a shark and if at any point, may be sighted during abnormally cold winters in Cancun, as the shore would be warmer, and this is an extremely rare anomaly and most of these sharks are harmless to humans.

Cancun is a tourist destination, and would be more expensive than other Mexico cities, including Mexico City (DF). What to do in Chetumal?

Mayan Culture Museum

Arguably the best thing to do in Chetumal, you can learn about and discover the ancient Mayan Civilization. Learn about all of the different aspects of the Mayans, such as how Mayans related to nature, the Mayan architecture, and the Mayan expansion. No historial stone is left unturned, as you can also observe some artifacts curated from these ancient times. Visiting the Mayan Culture Museum is fun, informative, and one of the best things to do in Chetumal. 

Oxtankah Ruins

Unlike the crowded ruins of Chichen Itza, visiting the Oxtankah Ruins is completely the opposite. You will feel like you have the ruins all to yourself, as you trek through the brief stretch of jungle to reach these ruins. The Oxtankah Ruins are pretty remote sitting about 15 km north of Chetumal, you can take a tour from the town, or hire a taxi to bring you there. The scene of the isolated ruins is beautiful and one of the best things to do in Chetumal.

Evening on Boulevard Bahia

The main boulevard in Chetumal is Boulevard Bahia. Once the sun begins to set in the evening, the street comes to life. You can find food vendors, some music, occasionally carnival rides and games, you can even take a fun tour bus to drive you around the city! One thing is for sure, you will have to try the tacos and all of the treats you can find on the Boulevard Bahia!

Bacalar Lagoon

About an hour outside of Chetumal is Bacalar, another small town on the Yucatan peninsula similar to Chetumal. But, Bacalar has a stunning lagoon with pristine waters, and perfect places to relax and take a swim. You can easily spend the day relaxing here as there are beachside bars and snack shops. The beautiful waters of Bacalar Lagoon, make it one of the best things to do here.

El Taco Loco

Dine at TripAdvisor’s number 1 rated restaurant in Chetumal. El Taco Loco has the best tacos in town, flavorful and fresh, you will definitely be coming back for more! It is important to note that El Taco Loco is only open from 8:00 AM to 6:00 PM, so plan on grabbing these tacos for lunch or an early dinner. 

Is Chetumal Worth Visiting? 

While many tourists may write off Chetumal as boring, we disagree. Chetumal is a perfect place to soak up some authentic Mexican culture, from the food to the atmosphere, interacting with the locals is always recommended and a lot of fun. We recommend only staying for about 2, maybe three days to fit everything in your itinerary. Chetumal is very underrated and if you have the opportunity, it’s a great city to stop in! 

Is Chetumal Safe?

Like most towns and cities on the Yucatan Peninsula, Chetumal is safe. It’s not as touristy, so you don’t have to worry about people upcharging you on prices for food and drink. We always recommend practicing common sense safety habits, such as watching out for pickpockets and not wandering the streets alone at night. If you are not looking for crime, it will not find you.

Playa del Carmen, Mexico is a small coastal town on Yucatan’s peninsula. It sits on the Riviera Maya and has a full stretch of lovely beach, where you can catch some rays in the warm sun. What are the Best Things to Do in Playa del Carmen?

Cenotes

What is a cenote? A cenote is the result of collapsing limestone, creating an underground pool. Cenotes can be found in caves, or out in the open, the Yucatan peninsula is riddled with cenotes and they are so much fun to dive and swim in! In Playa del Carmen, one of the most beautiful and popular cenotes is Cenote Azul, both natives and tourists recommend this local watering hole. It’s the perfect place to take a refreshing dip in a natural incident, local to the Yucatan region. There are many other cenotes in the region and some, where you can even snorkel, you could spend your whole time in Playa del Carmen jumping from cenote to cenote!

Beach Club 

As Playa del Carmen is mostly a resort town, most of the local beach is occupied by resorts who charge a fee to use their lounge chairs and occupy the beach space. If you aren’t staying at a resort, there are other options available, it is perfectly acceptable to occupy lounge chairs if (and once) you have purchased something from that establishment’s bar or restaurant. Mamita’s Beach Club is the perfect place to rent a lounge chair, relax on the beach, and even jet ski or parasail! But, if you’re a budget traveller and don’t want to worry about the extra money for chilling on the beach, then Lido Beach Club is your place. There is no cost to rent the chairs, nor a minimum spending amount, the perfect place to take a load off and relax! There are many beach clubs all over Playa del Carmen’s beaches, so you have to choose just one, but you do have to make it to the beach, as it is one of the best things to do here.

Frida Kahlo Museum

A great place to learn about the great Mexican painter, Frida Kahlo, this museum is on the main street in Playa del Carmen and is a fun way to get off the beach. You’ll be wrapped up in the vibrant colors of the works on display, which will bring a smile to your face. It is important to note that there are no Frida Kahlo original works, but the tribute pieces are just as beautiful and mesmerizing. If you are aware of Frida Kahlo, then the Frida Kahlo Museum is one of the top places to go.

Nightlife 

Even though it is a small town, you can find a gem or two in the nightlife scene. Whether you prefer something more local, or a big show and party, Playa del Carmen has you covered. Head to Zenzi for a night of salsa dancing- be sure to check the schedule for whi nights it is scheduled! If you’re not a dancer, the vibes in Zenzi are also great for those who are willing to socialize, and it never gets truly packed. If you’re looking for something a little more wild, check out Coco Bongo, a mix of performance act, bar, and club, it’s hard not to enjoy yourself at a place called “Coco Bongo.” No matter your taste, if you enjoy a bit of fun, you’re sure to find it at one of the best places to go in Playa del Carmen.

What to See in Playa del Carmen

Chichen Itza

The famous Mayan ruins are a short distance away from Playa del Carmen and make a great excursion for the day! Named as one of the New Seven Wonders of the World, these ruins are strikingly beautiful and impressive. The iconic pyramid makes a great photo op, but there is so much to see on the ruin grounds. From temples to ball courts, you’ll get a feel of how the ancient Mayan civilization lived and worshiped. 

La Quinta

Also known as Calle 5, or 5th Street, is a colorful pedestrian friendly stretch of road where there are many shops, restaurants, and food stands ready to be discovered! If you’re taking a break from the sandy beaches, wandering around the town is a great idea to get a lay of the land. Pick up a coffee or a smoothie, and make your way down the street as you window shop (or for-real shop) until you drop! 

Parque Fundadores

“Founding Fathers” Park is a public space that will sometimes host public events. Occasionally you can see dancers and street performers here, who are ready to shock and awe! In the park there is a massive statue of two people rising up to meet each other, it’s truly impressive. There is also a playground for kids to run and enjoy the summer weather while they climb all over little courses. Parque Fundadores is a great little stop in town, and one of the best things to see!

Unique Things to do in Playa del Carmen

Swim with Sea Turtles

If you head about 30 minutes south of Playa del Carmen, you will arrive in Akumal. In Akumal there is a shallow bay that is easily accessible and perfect for snorkeling! You have the chance to see Hawksbill, Loggerhead, and Green sea turtles, swimming with these kind creatures is an experience like no other and is one of the best things to do in Playa del Carmen. Since it’s 30 minutes away, we recommend hopping in a ‘Colectivo,’ a shared taxi that picks up passengers along the way and is an experience in itself, just remember to bring cash and make sure you tell the driver where you’re headed! 

Cozumel

From Playa del Carmen you can take a ferry to the island, Cozumel. Cozumel boasts some of the most blue waters in the Riviera Maya, and is perfect for taking a day trip! Relax on Cozumel’s beaches or wander the small island on scooter’s as you disolver all of the island’s beautiful secrets! 

Rio Secreto 

Literally just outside Playa del Carmen’s city center, the Rio Secreto caverns are an unexpected activity in a resort town! View some of the most interesting stalagmites and stalactites set against aqua rivers flowing through the caverns. For those who want to get out and have a little adventure, the Rio Secreto caverns are the perfect place to explore the Yucatan’s most interesting nature, it is truly one of the most unique things to do in Playa del Carmen.

Best Places to Eat in Playa del Carmen

El Fogon

Let’s be honest, one of the reasons you’re visiting Mexico is to try some amazing Mexican dishes. Here in Playa del Carmen you will find the best tacos at El Fogon. Considered one of the most popular restaurants in Playa del Carmen, it’s on everyone list and recommended by every local. It’s a very casual cantina, so there is not much seating and you can even end up waiting in lines for your meal. But, rest assured the tacos are so worth it, that even the locals will wait in the long lines to get some of these tacos! 

Alux

Another top restaurant in Playa del Carmen is this finer establishment, Alux,which is inside a cave. In a little carved out cavern, this restaurant even has a small cenote inside of it. The cool temperatures and colorful mood lighting make for a great romantic night out, or just a unique experience while you have some fine courses underground! Eating at Alux is one of the top things to do in Playa del Carmen!

 Elote and Marquesitas

One of the must do’s while in Playa del Carmen, and Mexico in general, is to try some of the quick and delicious street foods! Two of the most popular street foods are elote and marquesitas- both very delicious and perfect for a snack at any time! Elote is grilled corn on the cob, covered in spices, mayonnaise, and lime juice. While this may sound more like an adventurous taste, we urge you to try it, as everyone who has, loves it! Marquesitas are the choice if you’re craving something sweet. A fried dessert pancake, you can get it topped with all kinds of things like chocolate sauce, peanut butter, cream cheese, etc. But, the traditional marquesita is with nutella and cheese, and it’s definitely worth a try!

La Perla

Now, if you’re feeling really adventurous, we recommend going to La Perla, a traditional Mayan restaurant that serves up some unexpected creations. Hidden within Playa del Carmen’s busiest street, La Quinta, La perla is serving up Mayan delicacies, such as grasshopper. The menu has a variety, so do not be scared if you really don’t enjoy the occasional bug or two, but it definitely makes for an interesting meal!  

Is it Safe in Playa del Carmen?

As Playa del Carmen is a tourist town, filled with resorts, the economy depends on the tourist, which means there is little crime. Any crime that happens is out of sight and does not affect tourists or residents. However, practicing common sense safety habits is always a good idea, such as, watch out for potential pickpockets and be aware of your surroundings at night. Are there sharks in Playa del Carmen?

According to travelyucatan.com, the natural reef has almost disappeared, which means that sharks do not have a natural prey, hence no food for the sharks. There is a season during the year (November-March), where one spot in Playa del Carmen sees a migration of bull sharks. This spot is not near the beach clubs, and you would have to take a boat ride and go SCUBA diving to be in their presence. If you’re staying along the may stretch of beach in Playa del Carmen, you can relax and enjoy the beach, shark free!

Is Playa del Carmen Expensive?

Playa del Carmen is a town made for tourists. The economy depends on the tourist, and tourism in general. With this being said, expect higher prices in Playa del Carmen than other parts of Mexico. Lunch and breakfast are cheaper, but it’s important to know the spending potential.
